Dachshund Dearest

TURMOIL AT THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT ALL HEAD OFFICE. Chicago, IL: While sunning herself on vacation, your new hostess 'Bette' has been catching up with all The Long and Short of it All archives and notes all the seemingly unnecessary attention to "legendary film star" Joan Crawford.   She must agree with her namesake, actress Bette Davis, who once quipped amongst other similar sentiments:  The best time I ever had with Joan Crawford was when I pushed her down the stairs in 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?'

Bette's sure got some spunk.

Dapple The Birthday Girl Turns 18

The warmest of birthday wishes goes out to a pretty little girl named 'Dapple' who hails from Fort Mill, South Carolina - she turned an incredible 18 yesterday!  She celebrated with a special birthday cake.  Excerpt from the Herald Online:

There was an 18th birthday with cake and candles and balloons in Fort Mill on Monday – but the hairy teenager was not at Fort Mill High School.
This birthday was celebrated with party hats, but the teen was on all fours. She licked the frosting from the tiny birthday cake, with two candles – in the shape of a “1” and an “8” – right there next to the cake.
“I have the birth certificate to prove it,” said Dappie’s owner, “Rockin’” Randy Mahaffey, a former professional wrestler with a party hat on his big head.
The proof is an American Kennel Club certificate that shows that this tiny wiener dog really did turn 18 on Monday. May 6, 1995, was the date of birth. Read more and see a video at the Herald Online.  Thanks to our handsome friend from L.A., 'Pee Wee,' for sending this in!

Wieners Wieners Everywhere

It's Friday, and it's time to sing!  Via NYU Local:  Wiener dogs stormed Washington Square in New York last Saturday for the Spring Fiesta of the Dachshund Friendship Festival. The gathering let the little guys run with dogs of their own size; and with numbers came power. So many dachshunds played around the fountain that Shakespeare in the Square’s Taming of the Shrew couldn’t actually go on in the park. The performance was moved to NYU Stern’s Gould Plaza. But hey, we’ll take wagging wieners over Tischies any time. The climax of the day’s event involved everyone lifting their wieners in the air to sing the Dachsong.  Go ahead.  Click that link and sing!

Are you singing yet?

It's All About The Birthday Boy

Woof!

Your Long and Short of it All host 'Rowdy' turns 2 today!  He got to sleep in several minutes later than normal this morning and enjoyed a great little walk in the park this afternoon.  His favorite birthday present ever is having his new little sister 'Bette.'  Dad might have stopped on his way home tonight to pick up some raw chicken feet to treat the Dynamic Duo on Rowdy's special day.  And that's cause He's such a good boy.

Wirehair Wednesday: RAT Edition!

It's Wednesday, May 1, 2013, and you're tuned in to www.dachshundlove.blogspot.com and that can mean only one thing:  It's Wirehair Wednesday!  And boy do we have a good one for you this week:  it's the RAT EDITION!  There was a similar story and video last fall, Dachshunds On Rat Patrol in NYC, but this time it's been picked up by the Associated Press.  Good Dogs!

NEW YORK—Bodies tensed and noses twitching, the dogs sniff the hunting ground before them: a lower Manhattan alley, grimy, dim and perfect for rats. With a terse command — “Now!” — the chase is on.
Circling, bounding over and pawing at a mound of garbage bags, the dogs quickly have rodents on the run.
“Come on ... I mean, ‘tally ho!’ says one of their owners, Susan Friedenberg. In a whirl of barks, pants and wagging tails, dogs tunnel among the bags and bolt down the alley as their quarry tries to scurry away.
On a couple of recent nights, an eclectic group of ratters converged on an alley near City Hall about an hour after sunset. The lineups included two border terriers; a wire-haired dachshund; a Jack Russell terrier/Australian cattle dog mix; a Patterdale terrier, an intense, no-nonsense breed that’s uncommon in this country; and a feist, a type of dog developed in the American South to tree squirrels.   Read more at The Star.

Tony Blair receives puppies that gave Margaret Thatcher her last smile

Looks like we can add former Prime Minister Tony Blair to the list of Dachshund Lovers!  He is receiving two Dachshund puppies belonging to Baroness Thatcher’s former private secretary Lord Charles Powell, whose sausage dog Talitha recently gave birth. These are the puppies who you may remember gave Thatcher her "last smile."  Via The Telegraph:

Lady Powell said Cherie agreed a month ago that she would take two of the litter and during Lady Thatcher's funeral they spoke again, reported the Daily Mail.
“I had told Cherie about the puppies and then we spoke again at the church and I told her they how they were doing,” said Lady Powell.
“She is taking two for her children, Kathryn and Leo who adore dogs. I am pleased they are going to Cherie.
She added: “I have also sent a letter to Pope Benedict to see if he would like one. But really I want them to all go to friends.
“If I give the puppies to Cherie and the children I can stay in touch with them and get regular updates.”
Lord Powell said he was relieved to be giving away some of the litter, saying: “With the puppies, which are all in Carla's bedroom, we have got 14 dogs altogether.”

We would love it if the Pope had a Dachshund!  So, The Pope and A Dachshund walk into a bar....

These are purportedly the Dachshund puppies in question.

It should be noted that Princess Lea was recently on TV!  She writes:

We have to report we were on the evening news (sort of J) while we were walking in the park.
We just had to get some prosciutto from a famous Croatian singer, Severina.
And we disturbed the interview for Slovenian TV. The prosciutto was nice!

26 Hours In The Drainpipe

There was Dachshund Drama in Berlin on Tuesday when 'Oscar' and 'Emmy' went for a walk only to disappear in a drainage pipe.  Oscar came back out after an hour and a half, but the award goes to 11-year-old Emmy, seen here, for getting stuck for the next 26 hours.  Her owners feared it was all over for her, as she is on heart medication twice a day, and her whimpers were getting weaker as time dragged on.  Thankfully some fine water company workers were able to free her at last.  Via Bild.de

Vintage Dachshund Art: Adolf Eberle

Video by youtuber Leonid LL

Who?  Adolf Eberle was born in Munich, Germany, on 11 January 1843. He died in the same city on 24 January 1914.

A genre painter and the son of the animal painter Robert Eberle, Adolf was schooled in Bavaria. A pupil of the Munich Academy and from 1856 of Piloty, his first painting was shown in 1861.

Eberle’s natural abilities at figure interaction and accuracy keep the viewer marvelling and those who already own his work from selling. Adolf exhibited at Vienna, Dresden and Munich and received a medal at Vienna.  Source.

His paintings, which include many dogs, mostly Dachshunds, sell for tens of thousands of dollars today.  Thanks to an Anonymous Dachshundist for sending in the video!
